The General Directorate of Highways operates HGS for electronic toll collection on tolled roads and bridges. A rental vehicle may already be linked to the supplier's toll arrangement.

Before leaving the desk, ask how tolls are billed, whether an administration fee applies, and whether any route or bridge restrictions appear in the rental agreement. [3]

Check the contract before driving away

Compare the total rental cost rather than the headline daily price. Deposit, excess, fuel policy, mileage, additional-driver charges, toll handling and one-way fees are supplier-specific.

  • Photograph the bodywork, wheels, glass, fuel level and odometer.
  • Confirm the insurance excess and major exclusions.
  • Confirm the fuel and mileage policy.
  • Keep the rental agreement and roadside-assistance number available offline.

Use the car for the parts of Istanbul where it adds value

For a central sightseeing stay, compare the rental cost and parking burden with rail, ferry, bus and taxi options. A car becomes more useful when the itinerary extends beyond convenient public-transport corridors.
