Car rental guide for Dubai

A reviewed guide to DXB and DWC pickup, Salik toll handling, rental-contract checks and deciding whether a car fits a Dubai itinerary.

Sources last reviewed: 2026-09-30

Airport rental availability: Dubai Airports lists car-hire services at DXB across its terminals and also lists car-hire providers at DWC. [2] [3]
Citywide rental options: Visit Dubai notes that cars can be rented online and from airports, malls and hotels across Dubai. [1]
Salik tolls: Dubai uses the barrier-free Salik road-toll system. Rental suppliers can have their own method and administration charge for passing tolls to the renter. [4]
Licence, age and deposit: Acceptance rules vary by supplier and renter profile. Verify the exact driving-licence, age, deposit and payment-card requirements for the selected rate.

Choose the correct airport pickup

DXB and DWC are different airports. Confirm the flight airport before selecting the rental desk or a non-refundable prepaid rate.

Dubai Airports lists car-hire services at DXB and DWC, but the exact terminal, counter and opening hours remain supplier-specific. [2] [3]

Match DXB or DWC to the flight.
Check the supplier counter or meeting point.
Confirm after-hours pickup and return procedures.
Keep the booking voucher available offline.

Ask how Salik tolls are charged

Salik operates Dubai's free-flow tolling system, so there is no toll booth where a renter can simply choose to pay cash.

Before pickup, ask whether the supplier bills each toll later, adds an administration fee, or uses another contract-specific method. [4]

Compare the all-in rental terms

The cheapest headline rate may not be the cheapest final rental. Compare deposit, excess, fuel policy, mileage, additional drivers, parking/toll handling and return-location charges.

Photograph existing damage before departure.
Confirm the insurance excess and excluded damage.
Confirm fuel and mileage rules.
Check whether cross-emirate or cross-border travel needs approval.

Decide whether driving is useful for this itinerary

Visit Dubai presents taxis, public transport and rental cars as alternatives. For a trip concentrated around metro-served districts, compare those options against rental, parking and toll costs.

For dispersed meetings, family trips or destinations away from convenient rail, a car can be more useful; plan parking before driving into busy districts. [1]

Official and trusted sources

Rate, deposit and optional-protection terms can vary by supplier. Where information changes, use the latest official authority guidance and the supplier's current rental terms.
