Minimum rental age
Visit Qatar states 21 as the minimum age to rent a car. Individual suppliers can apply a higher minimum age, vehicle-category restrictions or young-driver fees. [2]
International driving permit
Qatar's government guidance says a valid international driving licence can be used for up to six months from entry, subject to the visitor remaining in visitor/tourist status. [1]
Home-country licence
Rules depend on the issuing country and licence type. Government guidance describes a short visitor period for certain approved licences and a temporary-licence route for longer stays. Verify eligibility before collecting the car if you are not using an international permit or GCC licence. [1]

What to have ready before pickup

Bring the original driving licence that qualifies you to drive in Qatar, your passport or accepted identity document, and the payment card required by the supplier. Visit Qatar specifically notes a passport plus a valid driving licence or international driving permit for car rental.

Do not treat the minimum legal or tourism-board guidance as the supplier's complete acceptance policy. A rental company can require the main driver to present a physical card in their own name, impose a minimum period for which the licence must have been held, or restrict premium, large or high-performance categories. [1] [2]

  • Match the driver's name across the booking, licence, passport and payment card where the supplier requires it.
  • Check whether the supplier accepts your exact licence country and format before arrival.
  • If your licence is not in a script readily understood by the supplier, verify whether an international permit or translation is required.
  • Keep the booking voucher and the supplier's pickup instructions available offline.

Visitor driving-licence rules

Qatar's government portal states that a valid international driving licence may be used for up to six months from the date of entry. It also describes temporary licensing for eligible visitors who need to drive for longer than the short period allowed on certain approved home-country licences.

If you hold only your domestic licence, do not assume that every foreign licence receives the same treatment. Eligibility depends on the issuing jurisdiction and the visitor's status. Confirm with the General Directorate of Traffic or the rental supplier before committing to a non-refundable booking. [1]

Age limits and supplier restrictions

Visit Qatar states that the minimum age to rent a car is 21. That is a useful baseline, not a promise that every vehicle is available at 21. Rental companies can set higher thresholds for selected categories and can apply young-driver conditions or fees.

When comparing offers, check the driver's age against the exact rate rules rather than only the headline price. A cheaper rate can become more expensive if an age surcharge, extra deposit or category restriction is applied at the counter. [2]

Insurance and what the rental contract should tell you

Qatar's 2024 land-transport executive regulation requires vehicles used for rental activity to meet licensing and safety requirements and to be comprehensively insured through the competent arrangements. This does not mean that every loss is automatically free of renter liability: excesses, exclusions, tyre/glass cover, off-road use and optional protection remain contract-specific.

The same regulation requires rental agreements to cover core items including the rental price, contract period, delivery and return place and time, the vehicle's condition at delivery, how accident damage is covered, and the conditions for early return. Read those fields before signing and keep a copy of the agreement. [3]

  • Identify the collision/theft excess and the maximum amount that may be held or charged.
  • Confirm whether tyres, wheels, glass, underside, roof and keys are excluded from standard protection.
  • Check the deposit amount, card type accepted and how long a pre-authorisation may remain after return.
  • Confirm who must be contacted after an accident and what police or insurer documentation the supplier requires.

Driving around Doha and beyond

Driving is on the right. Visit Qatar describes an extensive road network connecting Doha with surrounding towns and notes that public transport is also a practical alternative for many urban trips. A rental car is most useful when your itinerary includes places that are inconvenient by metro, tram or bus.

Do not assume a standard road car is suitable for desert or rocky access. Visit Qatar specifically notes that some remote attractions require a 4x4 because of sand or rough terrain. Off-road use can also be excluded by a rental contract even when the vehicle itself has four-wheel drive. [2]

  • Use the vehicle only on surfaces and in areas permitted by the rental agreement.
  • Plan parking at the destination before driving into busy central districts.
  • Allow extra time around major events, stadium areas and airport approaches.
  • Never rely on an old screenshot for a traffic restriction or road closure; use current official/navigation information.

Cross-border use: verify before you book

Do not assume that a Qatar rental car may be taken into another country. Cross-border permission is a supplier, insurance and border-document matter and can differ by vehicle and rate. Obtain written approval from the rental company before planning a road trip outside Qatar.

If a supplier allows cross-border travel, confirm the permitted countries, required vehicle authorisation, insurance territorial limits, roadside-assistance coverage and any fees. The booking price alone is not evidence that international use is permitted.

VIAZUNO pickup checklist

This checklist is editorial guidance rather than a legal requirement. It is designed to reduce disputes and unexpected charges by making the vehicle condition and rate rules clear before you drive away.

  • Photograph every side of the car, wheels, glass, roof and interior with the rental location visible where practical.
  • Record fuel level, odometer and any dashboard warning lights.
  • Check that all visible damage is written into the condition report before signing.
  • Confirm fuel policy, mileage allowance, return location, return time and grace period.
  • Confirm deposit, excess, additional-driver charges and any young-driver charge.
  • Ask what to do after an accident, breakdown, tyre failure or lost key.
  • Keep the rental agreement, emergency contacts and booking voucher available offline.

How to read the traffic-fine amounts

The amounts shown above are official conciliation amounts from the Traffic Law table, not a guarantee that every case will be settled at that amount. Law No. 16 of 2015 states that the licensing authority may settle listed offences at the table amount and may waive up to half of that amount when payment is made within 30 days of registration, at the authority's discretion.

If conciliation is refused or is not applicable, the case can proceed under the penalties provided by law. For a rental car, also expect the rental company to pass through the traffic fine and potentially charge a separate administration fee if its contract allows it. [7] [8]

If something goes wrong

For an emergency in Qatar, the Ministry of Interior's National Command Center operates the 999 emergency service. For a non-emergency vehicle problem, follow the rental company's roadside-assistance procedure first unless the situation requires emergency services.

After a collision, do not make assumptions about repair or liability procedures. Follow police instructions and the rental company's accident-reporting requirements, and preserve the documents the supplier or insurer asks for. [5]
